  16. ARC is used to create and maintain file archives.  An archive is a 
  17. group of files collected together into one file in such a way that the 
  18. individual files may be recovered intact.  ARC is different from other 
  19. archive and library utilities in that it automatically compresses the 
  20. files being archived, so that the resulting archive takes up a minimum 
  21. amount of space.

  23. When ARC is used to add a file to an archive it analyzes the file to 
  24. determine which of three storage methods will result in the greatest 
  25. savings.  Since one of the three methods involves no compression at 
  26. all, the resulting archive entry will never be larger than the 
  27. original file.

  29. ARC provides a full range of functions for archive creation and 
  30. maintenance.  ARC also provides password encryption to protect your 
  31. data from unauthorized use.

  33. While the exact degree of compression achieved will vary depending on 
  34. the contents of any given file, typical compression rates are as 
  35. follows:

  37.     Program (.EXE and .COM) files      20% to 30%
  38.     ASCII text and documents           50% to 60%
  39.     Spreadsheets                       50% to 90%
  40.  
  41. ARC calculates a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) on every file it puts 
  42. in an archive, and recalculates it whenever a file is extracted.  This 
  43. helps to ensure data integrity when archives are transmitted over 
  44. telephone lines.
